Reinhold Mann was appointed to his current position at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) on January 1, 2004. As Associate Laboratory Director, Reinhold manages all Biological and Environmental Research programs at the Laboratory, supported by the Department of Energy, as well as by other federal agencies including the Department of Health and Human Services.
The directorate he manages includes two research divisions (Life Sciences and Environmental Sciences), research and user facilities such as the Laboratory for Comparative and Functional Genomics, the Center for Structural Molecular Biology, and environmental field research facilities. He shares with other Associate Laboratory Directors the stewardship for programs that span across ORNL research directorates, such as the Computational Biology Institute and the Climate and Carbon Research Institute.
Prior to being named Associate Laboratory Director at ORNL, Mann served as Deputy Laboratory Director for Science and Technology, Chief Research Officer and Associate Laboratory Director for Fundamental Science at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) from October 1, 2001, until December 31, 2003.
Prior to joining PNNL, Mann had a 20-year career at ORNL. His research interests have been at the intersection of the physical and computational sciences with the life sciences. His work has addressed non-linear system identification; analysis of flow cytometric data; image processing and analysis; pattern recognition in DNA sequences; and computational biosciences.
Mann holds a Diplom-Mathematiker degree (M.S. in Mathematics), and a Dr. rer. nat. degree (Ph.D.) in Physics from the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. He was awarded a Feodor-Lynen Fellowship by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 1981-1982.
