The Materials for Energy Theme encompasses several low-carbon emission energy generating technologies, focusing on the development of novel scientific & engineering solutions to future clean power generation. Several proof-of-concept projects have been established ranging from the engineering of nanostructured solid oxide fuel cells to the development of new organic photovoltaic devices and combustion methodologies relying on non-carbonaceous fuels. Each of the projects in the Theme is multidisciplinary involving at least two of the three partners. The collaborative work between remote institutions does greatly benefit from advanced instrumentation and communications tools, such as the SNS and the lambda rail, under development in the Enabling Technologies Theme.
