Imperial College London embodies and delivers world class scholarship, education and research in science, engineering and medicine, with particular regard to their application in industry, commerce and healthcare. It fosters interdisciplinarity both internally and from external collaborations.
The College was established in 1907 through the merger of the Royal College of Science, the City and Guilds College and the Royal School of Mines. St Mary's Hospital Medical School and the National Heart and Lung Institute merged with the College in 1988 and 1995 respectively. The Charing Cross and Westminster and Royal Postgraduate Medical Schools merged with Imperial in 1997, and the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology and Wye College in 2000.
Members of Imperial’s academic community are frequently sought after for their valuable contributions to government and departmental committees at both national and international levels, to act as members of professional bodies, to advise and interact with industry and to offer informed comment to the media.
Imperial has strong links with both industry and government. Many distinguished scientists and engineers make a significant contribution to the more specialised teaching as visiting professors and lecturers. Conversely, advice from academics is sought by governments and industry. Industry also provides the college with financial support for certain academic posts, advanced courses, bursaries and scholarships.
