The Enabling Technologies theme aims to 'Create the technological structure for tomorrow's leaders in science and technology'. They aim to do this through building infrastructure that will allow new joint research. Research will be centered in five key areas:

2. Transmission electron microscopy
3. High Performance Computing
4. Grid Technologies
5. Neutron Scattering
