We will use a multi-modal research strategy to avoid a common method bias. the modes of study include online surveys, archival data, e.mail exchanges (where possible) and observations of face-to-face meetings and the Lambda Rail collaboration sessions.
This is necessarily longitudinal research to observe changes in collaboration patterns as well as the evolution and conduct of research activity outcomes.

Case histories: Collaboration and ICT-mediation
Our first task will be to research and analyse how collaboratories have developed and how collaboration technologies (ICT) have played a role. We will undertake an historical case study of an innovation tool used in virtual science teams and collaboratories. This descriptive and analytical review will identify key factors in collaborative practice as well as potential performance metrics for the empirical study.
Social network analysis
The online survey will provide an assessment of changed working practices, knowledge exchange and network dynamics over time. To circumvent problems with self-reported data, the project seeks to combine this survey with archival data. Such archival data could include individuals' publication records, granted patents, and the success rate of getting additional funding.
Case studies
In addition to the group-level survey work, we will undertake a number of case studies. Selected projects within the AtlanTICC Alliance and the MD Anderson Sister Institution Partnership will be selected to capture variety on the basis of:
