As Vice Provost for Research and Dean of Graduate Studies, Dr. Liotta guides the investment of research resources and nurtures the development of researchers and their programs. His Office of Research and Graduate Studies oversees the administration of a research enterprise expending over $425 million annually for FY’04. His management team supports interdisciplinary program development, manages the business processes for the research funding, and invests in world-class research facilities, federal relations and international research and graduate study collaborations. His responsibilities include programs to attract high quality faculty and graduate students to Georgia Tech, and assure that their innovations become realities in the global market place.
As Regents’ Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Dr. Liotta’s research activities involve both synthesis and physical-organic chemistry. His major interests lie in the areas of structure-property relationships, kinetics and mechanisms of organic reactions, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis (phase transfer catalysis and fluorous biphasic chemistry), molecular thermodynamics and solution theory, phase equilibria, reactions and processes in supercritical and near critical fluids, effect of high pressure and temperature on solution behavior, separation processes, development of environmentally benign chemicals and chemical processes, synthesis of new barrier materials, and development of novel materials
