Overview
The AtlanTICC Alliance is a tripartite alliance between three of the most prestigious scientific research centres in the UK and US, Imperial College London, Georgia Institute of Technology and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The Alliance was formally constituted in 2003 via a joint memorandum of Understanding, a Non-Disclosure Agreement and the formation of a tripartite board (see below). The remit of the Alliance was, and still is, to develop and exploit the results of innovative research and training which plays to the complementary strengths of all three partner institutions.
A range of fruitful collaborations have been supported since it’s inception, through scientific exchanges and foresight workshops which have resulted in major collaborations, grant proposals and scientific papers.
As a result of generous funding from the UK Office of Science and Innovation in early 2005, the Alliance has been able to embark on a strategic programme with initial focus on energy related science and technology, which builds upon the academic expertise and state of the art technological facilities available at our institutes. Future collaborative opportunities will arise from the development of new facilities such as the spallation neutron source for biosciences and supercomputers as they come online. Our current focus on energy research and training methods encompasses:
Energy Research
- Biomass: developing biomass resources for energy and materials with low environmental impact
- Bioenergy: developing innovative energy crops and biofuel technologies
- Biomaterials: developing biomass extractions, carbon dioxide activation and cellulose derivatives to explore higher value products from waste and resource
- Organic Photovoltaics: developing organic and hybrid solar cells
- Fuel Cells: developing solid oxide and PEM cells and methods of hydrogen production and storage
- Nuclear Power: nuclear engineering and fusion research
- GRID Technology: modelling and technology development for power and transmission systems for security, reliability and de-centralised generation.
Energy Training
- Modular training courses: jointly in key areas such as nuclear engineering and sustainable energy development
- Global Lab: λ-rail connectivity for delivery both of lectures and remote use state-of-the-art apparatus across institutes by students and researchers
- Educational exchanges: both projects and ancillary training courses including use of Georgia Tech’s European outpost in Metz
Management
The Alliance is backed by a Board comprising of strategic members of all three partner institutions. The Board and programme is directed by Dr Tariq Ali. Board members can be found below:
Dr Tariq Ali, Imperial College London
Dr Richard Templer, Imperial College London
Professor Charles Liotta, Georgia Institute of Technology
Professor Marilyn Brown, Georgia Institute of Technology
Dr Jim Roberto, Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Dr Reinhold Mann, Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Project Management is carried out by Imperial College Consultants, overseen primarily by Dr Michiyo Shima and Yvonne Tatchley
Themes
The research being carried out by the Alliance is currently divided into three themes:
B2B3: Biomass to Biopower, Biofuels and Bioproducts
Materials for Energy
Enabling Technologies
